I've cut and pasted it below if the link doesn't work...

2 MSD Adminstrators FIRED!!!

2 administrators no longer employed at deaf school

By Cathy Hayden
chayden@clarionledger.com

Two Mississippi for the Deaf administrators “are no longer employed,” state Superintendent of Education Hank Bounds said today.

The two are Superintendent Delores Mack and Principal Pamela Hervey, he said.

Bounds would not elaborate and would not say if their dismissals are related to Tuesday’s walkout of about 20 high school students.

The students protested that four of their 26 teachers are not proficient in sign language. Rosie Pridgen, superintendent of the Mississippi School for the Blind, will be superintendent over both schools, which are state residential schools on Eastover Drive in Jackson. Elementary principal Sandra Edwards will be principal of both the elementary and high schools.

Bounds said he doesn’t know yet if any of the students will be disciplined for the walkout. But he said earlier that it appeared staff members had a role in the walkout.

The Mississippi School for the Deaf enrolls 118 students and the School for the Blind enrolls 70.

Commentary: I am personally impressed by the swiftness of the MS Dept of Education in responding to the crisis. These courageous students took a big risk, facing possible expulsions by the iron-fisted administrators intent on repressing their rights, when they walked out in protest and spoke to the reporters. Apparently the poor signing skills of some teachers have been an ongoing issue for the students and the last straw was the refusal of one new teacher to communicate with her student in sign language. Thank to the aggressive reporting of a local guy who brought along an interpreter, another amazing feat considering the failure of the “top-notch” reporters covering Gallaudet Protest to do the same, the deaf students of this tiny state school were heard and the state department responded accordingly.

Please send an e mail of appreciation to the reporter, Bert Case at bert@wlbt.net for doing a good job reporting and also to News Director, Dennis Smith at dennis@wlbt.net, for providing an interpreter.

During the UFG Protest at Gallaudet, right before the students took over HMB and then later blocked the gates, there was a showing of the movie WALKOUT (about how the students in four or so East Los Angeles high schools walked out to protest the conditions there).

Why couldn't you do the same thing?

Dear Mr. Case,

Many people in Jackson have known about the lack of qualified, prepared teachers and principals at the MS School for the Deaf for years. Faculty have spoken up about this issue and have gone to the superintendent to no avail. Some employees have had to resign because they were "too vocal" in their criticism, and some have resigned because they were simply too disgusted, repulsed and demoralized to continue working at the school.

Hiring teachers and staff who cannot sign so that they can communicate effectively with the deaf students is an outrage. It is immoral and disrespectful. It is unconscionable! To add insult to injury, faculty and students at the school assert that the students are being threatened-- told they will be arrested. handcuffed, and suspended for 10 to 20 days or expelled if they protest or communicate with the public or reporters-- is this rumor or fact? If it is true, there is an even greater urgency to putting an end to the abuse of the deaf students who are under the care of the state of Mississippi. Shame on all of those who are responsible. Thanks for putting the spot light on this abomination.

Please don't allow this story to die.

Sheila
